Finding Relief from Chronic Low Back Pain with Intracept®

Living with chronic low back pain can be frustrating, especially when traditional treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections don’t bring lasting relief. If this sounds familiar, there’s a newer, minimally invasive option that may help: Intracept®.

What is Intracept®?

Intracept is an FDA-cleared, outpatient procedure that targets a specific source of chronic low back pain—called the basivertebral nerve. This nerve transmits pain signals from the vertebrae in your spine. If it's causing your pain, Intracept can block those signals, helping to provide lasting relief.

How does it work?

During the procedure, a small probe is inserted into the vertebrae through a tiny incision. Using radiofrequency energy (a form of heat), the probe deactivates the basivertebral nerve. The entire process typically takes under an hour and is done under sedation or local anesthesia.

Who is it for?

Intracept is designed for adults with chronic low back pain (lasting over 6 months), especially if imaging like an MRI shows changes in the vertebrae known as Modic Type 1 or Type 2. It’s not for everyone, but it may be a good option if you’ve tried other treatments without success and want to avoid more invasive surgery.

Why consider Intracept?

  • Minimally invasive

  • No implants or hardware

  • Doesn’t change the structure of your spine

  • Pain relief can last months—or even years—for many patients

Is it right for you?

Every patient is different. If you’re struggling with long-term back pain, talk to your doctor or spine specialist to see if you might be a candidate for Intracept. A simple consultation and MRI review could be the first step toward lasting relief.
